ジョニ・ミッチェル “Both Side Now”

こんにちは。

今日は、Joni Michellの ”Both Side Now”について書きます。1966年の名曲です。

この曲を知ったのは、映画 “Love Actually” でした。

クリスマスの朝、妻のカレン（エマ・トンプソン）は、子どもたちよりも早く一番に、夫ハリー（アラン・リックマン）からのプレゼントをオープンします。彼女は、夫がゴールドのネックレスを買ったことを知っていたから。しかし、それはジョニ・ミッチェルのCDだった。カレンは一瞬で、ネックレスは別の女性へのプレゼントだったと分かります。（彼女は夫にクリスマス前に「今もまだジョニ・ミッチェルに心酔している」と話していたのですが。）動揺をさとられないように寝室に行き、ベッドメイキングをする、、そのときに流れるのがこの曲。なんのセリフもなくベッドメイキングをするカレンの姿に、この曲が重なり、切なさに胸が痛くなります。映画の名場面の１つです。

もう一つ、Netflix イギリスドラマ “After Life”、シーズン３最終回の最後の場面でこの曲が流れます、、、エンディングにこの曲が流れて、泣かない人はいないのではないかと思います。深くて、美しくて、言葉では言い表せません。

”Both Side Now”、邦訳では『青春の光と影』となっているようです。

心を揺さぶられるメロディーと声、そして哲学的な歌詞を、わかりたいと思い、あえて日本には直さずに、英語の歌詞をそのまま書き写しました。何度も何度も聴けば、感じることができるかもしれないと思って。

2022年の終わりに聴くのにふさわしい楽曲なのではと思います。
